8 Resume Mistakes Everyone Makes
These universal errors apply to every industry and role. Fix these first before worrying about anything else.
Typos and grammatical errors
Even one typo signals carelessness to recruiters. Studies show 77% of hiring managers will reject a resume with typos.
Fix: Proofread multiple times, use spell-check tools, and have someone else review your resume.
Using an unprofessional email address
Emails like 'partyanimal99@gmail.com' create an immediate negative impression.
Fix: Use a professional email format: firstname.lastname@email.com or similar.
Including irrelevant information
Hobbies, personal details, or old jobs from 20+ years ago waste valuable space and distract from your qualifications.
Fix: Keep only information relevant to the job. Focus on recent, applicable experience.
Making it too long
Recruiters spend only 6-7 seconds on initial resume scans. A 3+ page resume rarely gets fully read.
Fix: Keep it to 1 page for early career, 2 pages max for experienced professionals. Every line should earn its place.
Using fancy formatting or graphics
Creative layouts, tables, columns, and images break ATS parsing. Your resume may never reach human eyes.
Fix: Use clean, single-column formats with standard fonts. Save creativity for your portfolio.
Writing job duties instead of achievements
'Responsible for managing projects' tells nothing about your impact. Recruiters want to see results.
Fix: Use the formula: Action verb + What you did + Measurable result. Example: 'Led 5-person team to deliver project 2 weeks early, saving $50K.'
Missing keywords from the job posting
ATS systems scan for specific keywords. Without them, you're filtered out before a human sees your resume.
Fix: Mirror the language in the job description. Include relevant skills, tools, and certifications they mention.
Using the same resume for every application
Generic resumes don't match specific job requirements and score poorly in ATS systems.
Fix: Tailor your resume for each application. Adjust your summary, skills, and bullet points to match the job.
