What Employers Look For on a Physician Assistant Resume

Practices and hospital systems screening PA resumes check credentials first: PA-C, the states you're licensed in, and DEA registration if the role prescribes controlled substances. Then they want your specialty and setting, patients per day, the procedures you perform, and how you work with your collaborating or supervising physician. New graduates should lead with clinical rotations and any specialty electives.

  • Put PA-C after your name and list each state license with its expiration date.
  • Name your specialty and setting: emergency, orthopedics, primary care, surgery, hospital medicine.
  • Give patients per day or shift and the procedures you do independently.
  • New grads: list each rotation with site, specialty, and weeks, and highlight electives that match the job.

ATS Mistakes That Hurt Physician Assistant Resumes

These errors make a Physician Assistant resume harder for software to read or for a recruiter to trust.

PA-C missing from your name and headline

High Impact

Recruiters search for PA-C. If it only appears at the bottom, your resume is harder to find and easier to skip.

How to Fix

Write it after your name and again in a certifications section with NCCPA and the year.

Listing duties instead of scope

High Impact

"Saw patients and wrote notes" describes every PA. Setting, volume, and procedures show your level.

How to Fix

Give patients per day, the setting, and the procedures you do independently.

Licenses without states or dates

High Impact

Credentialing teams need to know where you can practice now.

How to Fix

List each state license with its expiration date, plus DEA registration if you have it.

Rotations with no detail (new grads)

High Impact

"Completed clinical rotations" hides your most relevant experience.

How to Fix

List each rotation with site, specialty, and weeks, and put the electives that match the job first.

Physician Assistant Resume FAQs

How do I list PA-C on a resume?

After your name ("Jordan Lee, PA-C") and again in a certifications section: "Physician Assistant–Certified (PA-C), NCCPA | Since 2022." To keep it, NCCPA requires 100 CME credits every two years and a recertification exam (PANRE or PANRE-LA) by the end of year 10.

What should a new graduate PA resume include?

Your PA program and graduation date, PANCE date or result, each clinical rotation with site, specialty, and weeks, and electives that match the job. Add BLS or ACLS and earlier patient-care work such as EMT, scribe, or medical assistant jobs.

Do PAs need a DEA registration?

Only to prescribe or dispense controlled substances, which federal rules require a DEA registration for. List it if you have it, or note that it's pending.

What keywords help a PA resume in applicant tracking systems?

Your specialty and setting, procedures (laceration repair, joint injections, incision and drainage, splinting), patient populations, and EHR, plus PA-C, state license, and DEA. Use the posting's own terms.
